Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 9, 2026
Thank you for using Audio to Text - Gemini Free AI (the "Extension"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, handle, store, and share your information when you use the Extension. By using the Extension, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
Data Collection
Information You Provide
- Google Gemini API Key: The API key you enter in the Settings page. It is used to authenticate requests to the Google Gemini API.
- Audio Files: Audio files (e.g., MP3, WAV, M4A) that you choose to upload for transcription.
- Custom Prompt: An optional custom transcription prompt you may provide in Settings to control the formatting or style of the transcription output.
- Model Selection: The Gemini model you choose for processing transcriptions.
Information Collected Automatically
- Runtime State: The Extension may retain transient state information (e.g., file upload progress, transcription status flags) for UI state recovery. This information does not contain personally identifiable information.
- Browser Storage Data: Configuration items stored via
chrome.storage.local, including the API key, custom prompt, active file ID, and selected model name.
Information We Do NOT Collect
The Extension does not collect your browsing history, bookmarks, passwords, form data, cookies, device identifiers, IP addresses, or any other personally identifiable information.
Data Handling
We use the collected information solely for the following purposes:
- API Key: Used exclusively to authenticate with the Google Gemini API for speech recognition.
- Audio Files: Uploaded to the Google Gemini API for processing and generation of transcribed text. Files are deleted after processing completes.
- Custom Prompt: Sent alongside audio to the Google Gemini API to guide the format or style of the transcription result.
- Model Selection: Determines which Gemini model is used for transcription.
- Active File ID: Used to clean up any residual temporary files on Google servers if an operation is interrupted or resumed.
All communications with the Google Gemini API are encrypted via HTTPS. The Extension does not operate its own servers or maintain any backend database.
Your Rights and Controls
- Access: You can view your currently stored API key prefix and custom prompt through the Settings page.
- Modification: You can modify your API key, custom prompt, or selected model at any time in the Settings page.
- Deletion: Clear your API key or custom prompt from the Extension Settings, or uninstall the Extension to remove all locally stored data.
- Opt-out: You may choose not to use the Extension or not to provide an API key.
Data Storage
Local Storage
- API Key, Custom Prompt, Model Selection: These configuration items are stored in
chrome.storage.local on your local device. They are never transmitted to any third-party server (except the API key, which is necessary for Google Gemini API calls).
- Audio Files: Audio files are not persisted locally after upload. The Extension only holds a file reference in session memory for the upload operation.
Remote Storage
- Audio Files and Prompts: When you initiate transcription, the audio file and prompt are sent to Google Gemini API servers for processing. The temporary storage duration of files on Google servers is governed by Google AI Services policies. The Extension proactively deletes files immediately after processing completes.
- For Google Gemini API data handling practices, please refer to the Google Privacy Policy.
Retention Period
- Locally stored API key and configuration will persist until you modify or clear them through the Settings page.
- Audio files uploaded to Google servers are deleted by the Extension upon transcription completion. If deletion fails due to network issues, the files will be automatically cleaned up per Google's data retention policy (typically within 48 hours).
Data Security
- All API keys and configuration are stored in Chrome's isolated local storage (
chrome.storage.local), inaccessible to other websites or extensions.
- All communications with the Google Gemini API are encrypted via HTTPS.
- The Extension does not operate its own servers or maintain any backend database.
Data Sharing
Third-Party Services
Your information is shared with third parties only in the following essential contexts:
- Google Gemini API: Your API key, audio files, and prompts are transmitted to Google's servers to complete the speech-to-text functionality. This is a necessary step for the Extension's core feature.
- Chrome Extension Platform: The Extension uses Chrome's
chrome.storage.local API and chrome.sidePanel API. These operations are subject to Chrome browser's privacy policies.
No Sharing with Other Third Parties
We do not sell, rent, or share your information with advertisers, data analytics companies, or any other third parties without your consent. We do not use your audio data to train or improve any models beyond Google Gemini.
Legal Requirements
We may disclose user information if required by law or in response to valid legal requests by governmental authorities. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you of such disclosures, unless prohibited by law.
This developer declares that your data is:
- Not being sold to third parties, outside of the approved use cases
- Not being used or transferred for purposes that are unrelated to the item's core functionality
- Not being used or transferred to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes
Children's Privacy
The Extension is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the applicable minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When material changes are made, we will notify you via an in-extension notice or by posting the updated policy on the Chrome Web Store Extension page.
